For Spring 2011, Phillip Lim creates a collection for the modern day female dandy. Limcalls his muse the ‘dande-lion,’ a modern interpretation of the dandy that marriessubtl
ety with the austere power of a lion. These contrasting elements come together tocreate an energetic dialogue, resulting in crisp profiles and geometric contours thatsurprise us in how naturally and effortlessly they coexist.
A clean silhouette is key throughout the collection, derived from a refined reduction ofform. Strong shapes are pared down to only the most essential elements with reductivedecoration, which add to the subversive mood. The collection is created with radicalsimplicity in mind. The desire is to communicate an intention rather than a literalinterpretation.
Fabrications and patterns introduce texture through understatement, creating a fragiletension. New dimensions and linear qualities in Chantilly lace were uncovered, whilepencil lines on silk add a subtle graphic element. Subtle embellishments take the form ofribbon knots on silk and metallic flora hand-stitched on chiffon. Stiff suiting is brokendown to create fluidity and lightness. The palette for the season consists of tones whichexist in shadows: blush, camel, sable, husk, and dove with peeks of bougie blue.Spring 2011 is marked by the runway debut of the 3.1 phillip lim shoe collection. Takingcues from the modernist sculptures of Constantin Brancusi, the footwear carries on theevolving theme of sartorial contrasts. Wood platforms are sturdy and practical, yet lightas air, while needle heels present a sensual, sculptural profile. Matte calfskin, nubuckand vachetta leathers, and shaggy suede are thoughtfully chosen to add texture anddimension. This season also marks the launch of the “K.C.” satchel, which has beencreated to be carried forward and recognized as the Phillip Lim bag. The “K.C.”, alongwith the rest of the collection of structured clutches and totes, is crafted from unlinedpebbled calfskin in shades of rose, turtle, and black, with signature brushed nickel zipperdetails and click lock closure.
